EU Council adopts tighter rules on hazardous workplace substances

Published by · · Toronto

The EU Council adopted revised worker-protection rules on October 19, setting exposure limits for substances including cobalt compounds and adding welding fumes to the directive’s scope. Its release says the directive takes effect upon Official Journal publication, after which countries have two years to put the changes into national law.

Why it matters

Council adoption is a legislative milestone; it does not mean national implementation is complete.
